HOYA MELIFLUA IML 0735

Hoya meliflua originates from the Philippines, It is common in Apayao, La Union, Rizal, Bataan, Laguna, Mindoro, Palawan, Negros, Leyte and Panay. It is very similar to Hoya fraterna. The flowers are pink to orange-red. 10-20 individual flowers bloom in an umbel. The flowers are hairy and bloom mid – year. The aroma is sweet. The large flowers produce a lot of dark nectar that is used to colour fabric and furniture.

Most Hoya are well suited to hanging baskets or ladders and can be grown indoors under pot culture in a warm position but flowering is sometimes difficult.

The vine will enjoy most soil types but prefers well drained gravelly soils, moist but not wet, warm but frost free above 4 degrees.

Dig the hole twice the size of the pot and plant level with the surrounding soil. Mounding can help with wetter soils.

Prune after flowering but don’t cut off flower buds as flowers appear each year on the same bud. Fertilise during growing period and withdraw water in the colder months. Mulch well to conserve water.
