HOYA NICHOLSONII IML 0087

Hoya pottsii is a member of the Apocynaceae family and is a native of Australia.
This Hoya it is moderately fast growing. Like most Hoya it does well in baskets or ladders. It is also commonly known as Hoya nicholsonii.
This is much sought after for its attractive foliage that can turn a deep red colour with very striking veins on strong sunlight(hence the name Claret Hoya).
The flowers are gold/orange in colour with a lighter yellow corona and are10 mm across in clusters of 10 to 15 in each umbel. There are a number of cultivars of Hoya pottsii in existence. The spicy scented flowers occur around December to April its fragrance being most intense in the evening.
The vine, with its pinkish veined leaves, is attractive even when not flowering, although if given the right condition, that is, hot and humid jungle-like atmosphere, it will run riot in the garden, which can be untidy.
Most Hoya are well suited to hanging baskets or ladders and can be grown indoors under pot culture in a warm position but flowering is sometimes difficult.
Dig the hole twice the size of the pot and plant level with the surrounding soil. Mounding can help with wetter soils. The vine will enjoy most soil types but prefers well drained gravelly soils, moist but not wet, warm but frost free above 4 degrees C. Mulch well to conserve water.
Prune after flowering but don’t cut off flower buds as flowers appear each year on the same bud. Fertilise during growing period and withdraw water in the colder months.
