Piper betle is a member of the Piperaceae family and is native to Southeast Asia India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
It is a climbing shrub and is trained on poles or trellis in a hot but shady situation.
The chief constituent of the leaves is a volatile oil varying in the leaves from different countries and known as Betel oil.
This Betel plant is also used as a herb for wrapping food for Thai snacks, wrapping fish for grilling and the leaves are chopped for curries and seafood for a nice aroma.
It likes partial sun or shade grows to 900mm to 3 metres in container with a support method. It is vining in habit.
It also has religious significance in these countries.
