Description
HAMELIA PATENS COMPACTA
DWARF FIRE BUSH
Hamelia patens compacta is a member of the Rubiaceae family and is a native of the United States of America (Florida).
The Dwarf Firebush is a showy fast-growing evergreen shrub. It flowers all the year and produces showy terminal clusters of bright reddish-orange or scarlet tubular flowers with red flower stems. It has whorled leaves that are usually in three’s but occasionally as many as seven at each node. The leaves are grey to reddish veins and petioles.
It does best in full sun but quite well in partial shade. It becomes leggy in shade.
Once established, Firebush is drought tolerant, but it does best with frequent watering as long as the soil has excellent drainage.
Firebush can be used in hedges, in mixed borders with other small shrubs, and as a stand-alone shrub. It can be kept small by pruning but grows to around 1 metres.
Firebush is a valuable addition to butterfly and bird gardens. It is salt tolerant and will grow in any kind of soil as long as it is well drained.
