FLAME CREEPER or BURNING BUSH
The Combretum microphyllum is an amazing, rare tropical climber or shrub from Africa with leathery leaves and brilliant crimson-red brush like flowers. It is fast growing evergreen to semi-deciduous (in cooler areas) creeper. It can be grown as a climber, shrub or formed tree.
The Flame creeper flowers in late spring through to mid – summer, and is a stunning creeper when in full flower with its masses of tiny bright red flowers held in long sprays at the ends of the branches. The leaves are glossy dark green and slightly leathery.
If the Flame creeper may be allowed to scramble into large trees or up a trellis. If not supported it will grow into a 4 metre x 3 metre shrub. It is not ideal for small gardens.
Combretum microphyllum as an established plant can withstand a fair amount of cold. It is also fairly drought resistant and does not require much water. It prefers a full sun or semi-shades position and is attractive to butterflies.
