Description
AGAPETES SERPENS
HIMALAYAN LANTERN
Agapetes serpens is a member of the Ericaceae family and is native to the Himalayas.
It is a hard to find plant but a floriferous plant. It forms a lignotuber base that is around 150mm across from which arching branches appear. They are evergreen and can be around a metre long. The branches have closely spaced leaves that are tinged red.
The flowers are eye catching red and hang from the branches and resemble Chinese lanterns and have chevron patterns. They appear in summer and are followed by blue berries that resemble Blueberries.
Although the lignotuber rises above the soil the plant itself seldom become root bound. If left untrained it can reach up to 1.5 metres high. The growth pattern suggests it would make a nice standard.
It can stand low temperatures for a short period and is drought tolerant, it likes some shade and lots of sun.
THIS IS GREAT HANGING BASKET PLANT!
